Dear Gabriela and Sally
Tapologo was shown at our Human rights film Festival here in Chania, Crete, Greece, on Sat. 26th September. Those who attended were moved by the film and full of praise for it. In fact several teachers approached us afterwards and asked whether they could use the film in their lessons. Here are some of the remarks, written on cards, after the showing:

It was a very touching and moving film. We dont know this story about Africa and AIDS, and it is VERY IMPORTANT for Europe to see this side. Thank you for sharing it with us and giving us the pleasure of seeing these strong women working and helping each other.

A good film. I was impressed by the dissident comments by the Bishop of Rastenburg. The selfish and self-destructive behaviour of males who will not use condoms amazed me.

It should be seen by as many people as possible in Chania.

Could it be shown in our school? Please let us know.

In the light of these comments, and others like them, we are thinking either of screening the film again or making it available to schools possibly even local TV stations.

We have been discussing whether there is an opportunity to use the power in this film to influence the mining company - something along the lines of presenting them with a proposal of how they could better spend the allowance they pay their workers to live off site. For example, if these amounts were used to build a community rather than paid directly to the workers, the mining company could benefit from recognition and respect for investing in its workforce and the local area whilst at the same time having a neutral effect on its costs. What would probably be required is some agency or organisation to offer to do the leg-work of establishing the community development programme so that it is not an unwanted burden on the mining company. The film would be a strong communication tool to inspire both the mining company and potential development agencies.

Please consider this letter as a reflection of the admiration and appreciation I have for the film "Tapologo".
At the Centre for Civil Society in Durban, we are regularly exposed to documentaries about social struggles in adverse circumstances, and I have a traveled a little in Northwest Province and seen areas like Freedom Park. What your film on Tapologo does, quite uniquely, is combine everyday forms of commonsense survival and solidarity with a profound analysis. The political economy you have accomplished here, linking mining, sex work, immigration and migrancy, AIDS, medicines, condoms, religious tradition, patriarchy and generational dimensions, is invigorating. Rather than feeling depressed, I think the average viewer would feel - as did I - enormously enlightened, and many would move to a deeper structural understanding, which ultimately is required to move forward on these issues.
Congratulations, and I hope all your actresses are similarly empowered to take forward the work."

thanks for sharing the stories of a lot of people, especially the women... i watched the film three times - the third time with my graduate school students (community health nursing). several of them wrote their reflections, which i hope to share with you later. my co-facilitator, who's so touched by the commitment of the health workers, sent me this SMS after watching the film: "They're rich in spirit!!".

I had tears in my eyes from start to finish. I suppose I am one of the fortunate few who had the chance to visit Tapologo and Sally and Gabriela have reflected what I have seen perfectly. Everyone I met plays such an important role in life there and they were all playing that important role in the film. They expressed themselves and their situation exactly as I remember it, nothing was changed or exaggerated the way some documentaries do. Congratulations Sally and Gabriela! What you have done is truly amazing and I hope that everyone who watches the film will be touched the way I have been. May we thank God for people like you, who can bring all of us who live comfortably, such a real illustration of what is happening on the other side of the world so that we can play our part, no matter how small, to help them live a better life. Thank you for all your very hard work. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I took some friends to see this film at the tri continents film festival in Cape Town.We enjoyed the film and were moved by the strength and the love shown by the health workers in this film.Sally and Gabriella have defintely shown that they have a talent for making good documentaries and we all look forward to their next project.

Vuestro documental se acaba de pasar en una Semana de Cine Solidario que hemos organizado desde el Fondo de Solidaridad 0,7% de la UPV/EHU. Un centenar de personas, en su mayoría estudiantes de nuestra Universidad, asitieron al pase.
El documental es de una belleza exquisita, todas/os sonreímos con la deliciosa Gladys, nos emocionamos con esa mujer enferma que no podía ni amamantar a su bebé, admiramos la valentía de todas esas mujeres enfermas y generosas que ayudan a sus compañeras, nos sorprendimos por el egoísmo de aquellos que eligen su propio placer antes de respetar a sus cercanas,...
Enfin, sólo agradeceros la delicadeza del documental, la esperanza que transmite, gracias por mostrarnos a estas mujeres tan fuertes, tan generosas.
Este acercamiento sólo podía partir de mujeres... gracias por vuestra delicadeza.

Hola,

Soy activista por la reforma de la política de drogas desde hace 10 años y en la actualidad preparo una tesis doctoral sobre género y políticas de drogas. Estoy harta de ver documentales o reportajes repletos de víctimas impotentes ante una "plaga" que les supera o "expertos/as" que diseñan soluciones desde oficinas limpias y seguras que luego no funcionan.

Por fin un documental habla de las estrategias de resistencia y autogestión, que también las hay, sobre todo cuando son mujeres las que las lideran. Por fin un documental contextualiza un tema más complejo de lo que generalmente se muestra. Prostitución, patriarcado, pobreza, supervivencia, resistencia, empoderamiento, autogestión, cuidado, globalización, explotación, migraciones, exclusión, acceso a servicios, ciudadanía, derechos, capacidad de organización, voluntad de cambio...

Y además bello.

Probably the best documentary film I've seen on this subject. It’s an excellent and subtle combination of socio-political analysis and visual drama and poetry. The protagonists are magnificent, and you’ve given them the voice and space they deserve. Wonderful how each of them fill the screen and capture the audience.
TAPOLOGO should reach broader audiences; I would love to use it in our outreach programmes and to screen in my classes. Are you going to do a TV version? I heard you were talking about it with your co-producers. Please keep me informed!

GRACIAS Sally y Gabriella por este documental EXCELENTE que emociona y sacude por dentro. Me siento afortunada por haber podido asistir.
Habeis logrado que nos hagamos una idea adecuada de la realidad tremenda de esas mujeres con objetividad, delicadeza y buen hacer.
Me llama la atención su dignidad¡apenas se quejan!. La sencillez, alegria y cariño con el que las voluntarias hacen su trabajo y van creando una cadena de esperanza. Al recuperar su autoestima se vuelcan en ayudar a otras.
Perfectamente expuesto el problema y....la solución.
Creo que con proyectos como TAPOLOGO y mujeres con vuestra generosidad y capacidad de compromiso nos recordais que siempre podemos y DEBEMOS hacer algo .
Confio en que podais difundirla y llegue a mucha gente, pues esta muy bien hecha y se adivinan las horas de trabajo, esfuerzo e ilusión que hay detras.....¡mereció la pena!
Es dificil quedarse impasible despues de haberla visto.

Queridas Sally y Gabriela muchas gracias por contarnos esta historia de mujeres que eligen ocupar su espacio en el mundo. Me llenó su dignidad, sus sonrisas, sus colores, su voz y sobre todo su solidaridad para sobrevivir. Fue una experiencia preciosa ver el proceso de transformación personal de una de las voluntarias y como esa transformación finalmente tambien es social porque ayuda a tejer la red humana de Tapologo.

Ademas de parecerme interesante y descriptivo de una realidad tan dura, he sentido como si hubiese estado alli con Tempi y todas ellas, me ha dado ganas de ir corriendo a echarles un cable. Esta exquisitamente narrado y fotografiado, mostrando la crudeza de la situacion junto con la esperanza y el espiruto alegre de su gente a pesar de todo.
Espero se proyecte muchisimo y recoja premios y genere nuevas ayudas para el proyecto Tapologo.

es uno de los mejores documentales que he visto en mi vida en su temática. trata con rigor y al mismo tiempo con una enorme delicadeza y tacto no ya la enfermedad del SIDA, suficientemente dura de por sí, sino el problema de ser mujer paupérrima en un país del Cono Sur. Admiro el respecto con que se ha hecho y os animo a verla. Para cambiar este mundo hay que conocerlo. esta es una buena oportunidad.

vi la película hace cuatro días y aún no he salido de esa especial sensación de verdad, de valor, de belleza y tristeza, de ternura y vulnerabilidad. Hay momentos, planos, tan cercanos, que sientes a esas mujeres sencillas, tal vez asustadas, pero enteras y serenas, como hermanas. Algo que destacaría es, junto a la sensación de "fotografía", el silencio. Ese sereno silencio donde la persona, su mirada, la imagen, dice todo y da paso a la reflexión y la sensibilidad. Gracias a las dos por tan buen trabajo, por vuestra madurez, y por lo que nos transmitís con todo ello.
Me gustaría, como te comenté, si os parece bien, proyectarla a través de las asociaciones de mujeres de Lanjarón y Órgiva, como una defensa de todos esos valores que hemos resaltado: la capacidad de unirnos y cuidarnos que transforma cualqueir realidad, por dura que pueda ser, en una experiencia humana elevada. Muy aplicable a problemas como la violencia doméstica en nuestro país... Espero vuestra aprobación para llevarlo adelante.
