Please consider this letter as a reflection of the admiration and appreciation I have for the film "Tapologo".
At the Centre for Civil Society in Durban, we are regularly exposed to documentaries about social struggles in adverse circumstances, and I have a traveled a little in Northwest Province and seen areas like Freedom Park. What your film on Tapologo does, quite uniquely, is combine everyday forms of commonsense survival and solidarity with a profound analysis. The political economy you have accomplished here, linking mining, sex work, immigration and migrancy, AIDS, medicines, condoms, religious tradition, patriarchy and generational dimensions, is invigorating. Rather than feeling depressed, I think the average viewer would feel - as did I - enormously enlightened, and many would move to a deeper structural understanding, which ultimately is required to move forward on these issues. Congratulations, and I hope all your actresses are similarly empowered to take forward the work."

This story can teach so many

From my political point of view I found that very problematic, said Sally Guttiérez Dewar about her initial misgivings in making the documentary Tapologo, screening at the Tri Continental Film Festival this week. However, a lifetime of respecting her sister Gabriela's opinions prompted her to at least find out more about the home-based carers of Freedom Park, a squatter camp in the North West Province.
"I saw it (the Tapologo network) and spent time with the women and met the people of this local Catholic community. They get up every day at 5am and go to the squatter camp to give out anti-retrovirals and provide counseling. I just thought, this is a story that has to be told and this can teach so many other people," she said.
A grant from the Ministry of Culture in Spain allowed them to finish the film in April, as the first feature under the new Spanish South African co-production treaty, though they funded the first half themselves.
A friend of theirs, Tapologo co-founder Catholic bishop Kevin Dowling, sparked their interest in stories about empowerment.
"He kept on telling us: 'You should see how these women are changing their reality'," said Gabriela.
She has a production company and mainly works as a television director, while Sally is a visual artist, but this is the first documentary feature they have worked on together.
"When I came back from 11 years of living abroad, one of our dreams was to do something together. My work as a visual artist was going more and more towards documentary, so we made a short film and it worked very well. We felt comfortable working together, so we decided to start the Tapologo adventure," said Sally.
The first time they came out, in 2005, was to see whether the people would open to them. After that they came back on three separate trips to do the filming.
The documentary is told in two parts, with the first half giving context of the women's reality, the second delving into the lives of three specific women.
One of the reasons local film company Uhuru Productions was particularly interested in becoming involved in the project, was the privileged access Sally and Gabriela had to the HIV positive women who work as sex workers.
"They were very impressed that we have this relationship of trust with these women, because we spent a lot of time with them and really explained what we wanted to do and why," said Sally.
The women interviewed candidly raise their thoughts on the damaging role of certain traditional healers and the circumstances which force them to use sex as their only commodity. Bishop Dowling's questioning of the Catholic church's official stance on the use of condoms is especially damning.
"Listening to them you learn so much and you definitely realise they aren't victims and deserve to be portrayed as what they are, agents of change, people who are changing a situation of degradation, misery and dependency on men to dignity and hope," said Sally.
They've shown Tapologo at five Spanish film festivals, but its screening at the Durban International Film Festival earlier this month was special.
"In KwaMashu, a very young lady stood up and said: 'I've seen many HIV films and this is the first one where I feel comfortable, because women are not portrayed as victims and it's a story of hope and dignity and none of the African clichés have fallen into it'. She gave us the exact answer we needed," said Gabriela.

Tapologo made a great impact on me. I didn't want to breathe in case I missed a bit & I was sorry when it ended. Very informative and incredibly personal, moving but not at all sentimental despite the human stories. The film is excellent and deserves a wider audience; the sort of film (& certainly the quality) of BBC & Channel 4 documentaries like 'Cutting Edge' The pace permitted the watcher to be in the project rather than just an onlooker.

Tapologo show a face of a degraded humanity ,but at the same time it shown how there is still people who wants to fight for themselves and for a better life. I'm happy to see the strength of these women and the desire of life that they have.Thanks Sally to see these people to the world.

I saw the film at Madrid Documenta and can not get it out of my head. The enormous complexity of the problem is matched by corageous people who just won't give up. The way it is filmed, giving time and space around the wonderful characters (none of this fast cuting which passes for "modernity" and impedes thinking) gives the spectator the feeling of being there. The feeling that Apartheid is not over and that is eating people away from inside. But in spite of the terrible situation there is no pornography of misery here. The women are the powerful and disciplined warriors which, one feels it in the bones, are going to eventually win this terrible, wasteful war.

TAPOLOGO me ha parecido un soplo de esperanza, una apuesta firme por el papel de la mujer en la lucha contra la miseria, contra el sida...Me ha impresionado y me ha encantado.Me he sentido cerca de Freedom Park. Y felicito a Sally y a Gaby por contarnos tan bien, con tanta sensibilidad y con tanto arte cómo hay personas valientes que de verdad están humanizando este mundo nuestro...

¡¡¡Qué buen rato nos hicistéis pasar!!! No hablo de una comedia divertida, sino de Tapologo, de una película dura que consigue un buen equilibrio entre la delicada y en un principio triste información que nos va soltando y el entretenimiento que supone el interés que va despertando. Conseguís un documental ágil y luminoso....Chapeau por el ritmo que consigue el montaje. Cuando ya vemos los frutos de la labor del grupo de mujeres está haciendo, la peli se hace sublime, ya que refleja muy bien el paso de la desinformación y el egoismo del humano en la jungla de la necesidad a los efectos del amor, de la amistad, de la unión social.
La secuencia final es soberbia. Los espectadores adivinamos que ya vamos a dejar Tapologo, que estamos dando nuestro último paseo por Freedom Park.....todo se vuelve sedante, tranquilo, meláncólico. Ya conocemos esa ciudad y nos vamos a ir de ahí, sabemos que también hay ángeles que la cuidan,........ todo el duro contenido de la peli se ha tornado tranquilidad...... reconocemos la ciudad, la vida,..y también el buen cine.

Para mí, "Tapologo" ha sido un soplo de aire fresco en el tratamiento habitual que se le da a los asuntos relacionados con el VIH y el sida en el mundo, en general, y en África en particular.
La mayor parte de las veces, este tratamiento va más en la línea del tremendismo, de pulsar la compasión pero también la "otridad", es decir, el hacer sentir al/la espectadora que eso que ocurre en la pantalla es terrible pero no tiene nada que ver conmigo sino con esas "pobres gentes" que son tan lejanas y exóticas.
La mayor parte de las veces se menosprecian las propias fuerzas de las comunidades, quedan invisibilizadas en el deseo de mostrar los problemas en un intento bienintencionado de movilizar las conciencias. En "Tapologo" se puede ver que esas gentes lajanas y exóticas cuentan con recursos propios que son tanto o más poderosos que las ayudas externas (aunque éstas sean necesarias).
Gracias por poner esto de manifiesto, por sacar a la luz el poder que tienen las mujeres que viven inmersas en esa inhumana situación a la que se ven abocadas casi irremediablemente. Porque ya es hora de que se deje de "paternalizar" nuestra relación con las comunidades con menos recursos económicos y utilizar su miseria para ganar méritos ante nuestra propia conciencia.
Felicidades por vuestra sensibilidad y gracias por la frescura.

Desde mi punto de vista "Tapologo" es un trabajo de gran calidad cinemátográfica, por la presentación, el tratamiento de la imagen y los relatos del Documental creo que Sally y Gabriela se merecen el más alto reconocimiento social. Pero no puedo dejar de pensar que "Tapologo" es una realidad a unos kilómetros de distancia de Madrid,un proyecto autogestionado por mujeres africanas, que se encuentran en la más extrema de las condiciones de vida, y en ese sentido quiero expresar toda mi admiración y respeto por todas las mujeres&hombres de Tapologo porque cuidando de sus cuerpos y de sus vidas están luchando por un Mundo más justo. !Estoy profundamente impresinada!

Lo que más me gusta del documetal es la delicadez con la que se trat la enfermedad.En este caso una enfermedad tan estigmatizada . Me gusta la valentía con la que estas mujeres la afrontan y las declaraciones que se consiguen del arzobispo sobre la sexualidad de las mujeres africanas. Lo que más disfruté es de la ausencia de abnda sonora en la pelícual que aunque tine canciones pero me gusta que apenas tenga música porque al ser tan descarnado enfatiza mucho más lo que se está contando . Hola Sally y Gabriela,
Me pareció una película excelente en contenido y calidad.
Fue impresionante ver cómo las mujeres pueden crear una red de ayuda, en tan difícil contexto, en un tema -el vih/sida-, tan mudo, estigmatizado y con tanta discriminación y al que es difícil poner voz sin traspasar la frágil línea del sensacionalismo, victimismo, al que la información nos tiene acostumbrad@s.
Nunca se habla de la fortaleza y capacidad de las personas que viven con VIH para luchar por la vida, contra la enfermedad, el estigma y discriminación que son mucho más dañinos que el propio virus.
Creo que vuestra película tiene este importante logro: una red de mujeres que cuentan su historia y donde dais voz a las propias protagonistas sin ninguna manipulación informadora, valorando su trabajo y su lucha en un continente donde es aún mas difícil vivir con el VIH.
Muchas gracias por la sensibilidad, transparencia y sinceridad en tratar este tema tan silenciado y manipulado moralmente.

Hola,
Como ya les dije a Sally y Gabriela vía e-mail, Tapologo me parece una película excelente.
En Documenta Madrid le di la máxima puntuación por varias razones. Primero, porqué me parece necesario que películas que tratan temas com este ganen premios y popularidad. Segundo, porqué plantean un formato atractivo y con calidad cinematográfica. Y por último, por qué no decirlo, porqué tampoco está mal que dos mujeres salgan premiadas.
En fin, a pesar de que no hayan ganado, muchas felicidades y muchas gracias por la película.
